The first big assignment I did at WDKA consisted of analyzing an artwork and translating it into three designs. I chose ‘Broken Screen’ made by American artist Violet Banks. The artwork comprises black reflective aluminum screens whose plywood backs emphasize construction over illusion and are even draped with clean and neatly folded workman’s overall (not visible in the picture). Banks often uses themes of Americana, violence and a cruel unjust world in his works.
As part of this assignment I was tasked to reinterpret this artwork into three looks, so using themes of Americana, subversion and destruction I designed three looks embodying the essence e of the artwork. I utilized the dark color scheme and its destructive material manipulation to inspire this reversible wool coat, incorporating asymmetrical pocket designs and molten, warped organza appliqués.
