Bending Functionality

Bending functionality is an assignment held in year 1, which consisted of designing a collection based on an archetypal garment. I chose the tuxedo jacket as a starting point. I also made a selection of other practical details and design-features of garments I own, to inform my first designs.

After receiving feedback that I should be more transparent in my design decisions I did a visual research into S&M iconography, making a selection of pictures that would serve as my inspiration and then did line drawings of the elements I would use in the collection. Using this new visual

research and more in-depth research into the elements of the tuxedo jacket, I designed a collection that used S&M iconography, classic tuxedo details and subversive material and colour choices which led to a playful, powerful, sadomasochist collection of ten looks.
