Bold Statement

Bold Statement was an experiment- based assignment from major 1 of year 2. The assignment was led by Sanne Schepers. Over the course of six weeks, students were instructed to make a large number of drapings on a dress-form, which over the following weeks we were instructed to rethink and design into a comprehensive collection.

The assignment was intended to familiarize students with an incidental, experimental way of working. Using real life drapings, done with fabrics and existing garments, as a starting point. Students were encouraged to analyse, rethink, reshape and translate these speculative shapes into garments. Throughout the weeks following the initial draping class, we made drawings each week interpreting the drapings. In the most fruitful chapter of this assignment I made over 25 designs using materials such as paint markers, oil paints, pencil and fineliners. I then translated these real life drawings into digital designs (pictured above). The result was an experimental collection working with scale, proportion, texture and colour. This collection gave me insight into a much more uncontrolled way of working, using the real to inform the plausible.
